Is this Real
My father-in-law ran across this coin at an auction and is selling them on ebay and is now catching some noise about it being fake. How can I tell. Should I just pull it off ebay.

Re: Is this Real
if it's real, it is worth 3000-5000 dollars. how much did he pay for it?
There are boatloads of fakes coming from China now. If I thought it was real, I would send it to PCGS. |

Looks like the auction is for a fake one. Top one is fake, bottom is real. Check out hte links for comparison.

Re: Is this Real
Without seeing the coin in person, I cannot be totally sure but I would declare your coin a fake. I would email the bidders informing them and see if they would still like to bid.
Can you measure the diameter? It should be between 39-40mm and your weight is way off. Weight should be 29.96. You are 3 grams off. If this coin were real the grade would be around EF48 to AU53, hence RossLs price range, and the weight would be very close. Even a worn coin would weigh more. Concerning the weight, I would question the metal content. Good luck, THe Great Ag |
Re: Is this Real
I think it if were me, I'd send it in to PCGS and have'em grade it, according to the Redbook, if it's authenic, it does look like it would be worth several thousand

Re: Is this Real
The stars location under the last curl of hair is the giveaway, very different on the real one.

Re: Is this Real
The coin weighs exactly 26.992 grams. The guy ran a dump his entire life. We bought 10 of them for 11 bucks a pop and he has 10 more he wants to sell. I am just a shaking.

EDIT...also looks like the noses are slightly different...the real coin has a pointy nose, the other one shows a rounded nose... |
Re: Is this Real
the star on the right side in relation to the bust is off too.The distance from the bust to the edge of the coin could change a bit with a worn die and/or off center stamp but not the star.

Re: Is this Real
The dates in the lot range from1795 to 1801.

Re: Is this Real
I am ending the auction just to be on the safe side.

They are nice to look at. Do a little research and see if they are silver. Could fetch a bit more at auction. The Great Ag |
Re: Is this Real
A magnet will not stick to any of them. They have be something other than iron.

Re: Is this Real
Sorry, JH:
As far as I can tell they are all fake. Weigh them and see how far off they are. One of the biggest hints is the uneven wear patterns. Stars are in great shape but Liberty is worn (flat in some cases). Coins do NOT wear this way with use. You got scammed, sorry. Your best hope is they are atleast silver. Then you can sell them as silver replicas and make a little profit. The Great Ag |
Re: Is this Real
Thanks. I'll stick to Maple Leaves and SAEs.
